Real Estate & Renovation Disputes

For most people, their only interaction with the legal system is when they own property. Real estate is often a person’s largest investment. We understand how difficult these disputes can be, especially when it is not just about money, but about your home.

We have almost 20 years of real estate experience and have assisted many homeowners, realtors, and contractors avoid court and reach agreements. Our focus is de-escalation and resolution.

Most of the time, we only become involved when the dispute has occurred. However, we strongly recommend clients obtain legal advice before they sign any contract. Realtors do a good job when it comes to purchase and sales agreements, but when it comes to contractors, leases, and tenancy issues, seeing a lawyer before you sign can save you time and money.

The process

Before scheduling a consultation, it is important to make sure that our services are a fit for you. We do this with a free 15-minute telephone consult.

Our starting point is to triage the dispute.  This means reviewing the contract, if there is one, and ensuring our clients understand their rights and obligations. This is normally done in an initial consultation which costs $400 plus tax.

At the initial consultation, we will outline your options and advise you on the relevant law. We will discuss with you what services we can offer and advise you of what other services are available, like mediation or arbitration.

You decide how much help you need.

Contract disputes require continual cost-benefit analysis. Your options may include a full Supreme Court trial, but that will only make sense if the dollars and cents make sense. We will give you advice on what you can do on your own and what will require specialized assistance. You will then decide if our services are needed, and to what extent.

Budget

Cost is always an important factor. Many clients will set a budget for legal services and we will work out what we can provide within that budget. Other clients will use us like a consultant. They will have us in their corner when they need us and only pay us for the time they use.

Our bespoke unbundled legal services are designed to save you time and money.
