Butterfield Law Privacy Policy

Butterfield Law (“BL”) is bound by the privacy principles set out in the Privacy and Protection of Information Act (as amended from time to time) and the Law Society of British Columbia. The proper management of personal information is a priority at BL.  BL policies in relation to its management of personal information are set out in this Privacy Policy. In this Privacy Policy, the term “personal information” refers to any information or opinion about an individual whose identity is apparent or can be reasonably ascertained from the information or opinion.

Collection

Why does BL collect personal information?

BL collects personal information to fulfill functions under the Legal Profession Act. Additional information may be acquired for the purpose of research. However, such information is collected and retained anonymously.

What if I do not wish to provide personal information?

BL is required to verify the identity of each client. Individuals seeking general legal advice – non-clients – must provide sufficient identification to ensure compliance with conflict check protocols.

Use and Disclosure

How does BL use and disclose personal information?

BL does not disclose personal information, except as required by law and subject to solicitor/client privilege.

Data Security

BL takes reasonable steps to keep all personal information secure and to protect that personal information from misuse, loss, unauthorized access, modification, or disclosure.  If BL determines that personal information is no longer needed for any purpose, BL will take reasonable steps to destroy or permanently de-identify that personal information.

When using the BL website, or any website, you should be aware that no data transmission over the Internet can be guaranteed as totally secure. Although BL strives to protect such information, BL does not warrant the security of any information transmitted to it over the Internet. Any information transmitted to BL over the Internet is done so at the risk of the person or organization transmitting the information.

BL may from time to time partner with other Internet-based search engines or service providers, which may collect personal information. Please refer to their privacy policies for further information.

Access, Corrections, and Further Information

BL endeavors to keep personal information accurate, complete, and up-to-date. If any person wishes to access, review, or make corrections to his/her personal information held by BL, that person may do so at any time by contacting BL and arranging to attend at our office in Victoria to review his/her file. However, BL may refuse to provide any person with access to information where BL is permitted by law to withhold that information, or where that information may identify the names and locations of third parties, or put any party at risk of harm.  If any person requires information about the way BL manages his/her personal information or has any queries, problems, or complaints, that person should also contact BL at the details below.
